2023 was a crazy year in Combat Sports and my wish for 2024 is to make it bigger and better. Here’s how ⬇️:

1. Better information, advice and guidance for fighters on brain damage. Tris Dixon's book, Damage is a really impactful read that speaks of the untold damage happening to fighters in the training room, on the road and in the ring and with Floyd Mayweather Sr recently being diagnosed with dementia, fighters need to know the risks and early🙏🏽

2. More accountable judges and commissions. Let's face it - combat sports needs regulating. But it needs regulating to a high standard. Some judges and commissions fall short of that regularly and we never hear what actually happens after...more accountability please.

3. Open scoring. Much like point 2 - in no other sport do you not know the result until the end with no insight along the way. Open scoring will help weed out the incompetent judges and let fighters take their destiny into their own hands.

5. DAZN, Prime, Sky, TNT, and FITE TV are just some of the places you can watch fights...what happened to the terrestrial days. More mainstream showcases is a must to continue to grow the spectacle we love!

2023 was a crazy year in MMA and my wish for 2024 is to make it bigger and better. Here’s how ⬇️:

1. Less champ champ fights. We’ve seen it. We know the Conor McGregor story we know the DC story. We love the Volk attempts but let’s see more champions clean out their divisions with at least 5 defences before we entertain this champ champ talk, please 🙏🏽 
2. Better fighter pay. There is a whole lawsuit going on right now surrounding the UFC and fighter pay. Yes, baseline pay in the UFC is better than in most boxing promotions. But, sport for sport - the overall revenue share is far short of where it should be.
3. Group post fight press conferences. UFC 199. Rockhold v Bisping 2. That’s the last time we saw group post-fight press conferences. It was carnage! That’s why I want to see it again.
4. Cross promotional fights. Last night we saw Bellator v PFL and it was an interesting card with purpose. We need the sport to be more collegiate to find out who really is the best. That brings me onto…
5. Jones v Ngannou. The fight the fans want to see. The GOAT v the Lineal Champ. Probably a pipe dream but that doesn’t stop me asking for it.

2023 was a crazy year in Boxing and my wish for 2024 is to make it bigger and better. That's why, I want to see: 1. An end to the Conor Benn saga. Get in front of the board and get the issue resolved so we can see you in the big fights we all want! 2. The Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World keep and defend their undisputed title. Forget stripping them and degrading the outside belts. When we've figured out #1 in the sport - let him fight whoever is next for the whole Crown. One belt, one face, one name. 3. The Dream vs Tank. I'd love to see Gervonta Davis fight Devin Haney. It's the test they both need and the mega-fight the fans want. 4. Saudi energy replicated across the sport. We know what can be done with coordinated effort. Everyone else, take note! 5. More shoulder content. I miss All Access. I miss 24/7. I love UFC Countdown and Embedded shows - more of that please. He talks to us about his work with Northamptonshire Sport, England Boxing, looking after 200 boxing clubs across the country and where he is now, Matchroom Boxing, one of the biggest Boxing promoters globally. This week we are joined by PhD researcher, Christian Davis who talks to us about his work which gives an account of the social structures within a Leicester gym serving ethnic minority communities. It aims to understand how race, gender, social class, and masculinity intersect to affect inclusion/exclusion in this space, and how local sports clubs and the local community influence the construction of urban identities. Our discussion covers Chris meeting the right people at the right time and benefitting from good role models who saw more for him than he saw for himself. Chris went to university via an unconventional route and faced an internal battle with imposter syndrome on the way but somewhere along the line, he discovered his joy for learning and won an award for Student of the Year! While discussing boxing, we touch on the racialised elements that form part of the narratives in the build up to fights and sporting events more broadly. For example, Tyson Fury publicly questioning the size of Francis Ngannou’s manhood may seem like a harmless joke but is rooted in the sexualisation of Black Men; Linford Christie’s “lunchbox” and the notion of the Great White Hope in Heavyweight boxing are also examples where race is a key talking point. Good and bad. Chris’ research bringing together race, class, gender and more within boxing is truly a fascinating endeavour. We are back after an extended summer break to bring you a fantastic episode on domestic UK tourism!

We're joined by expert in the feild, Dr Marcella Daye who shares with us her latest research into domestic tourism by Ethnic Minorities in the UK.

Marcella is a fantastic communicator with a history working in radio and she shares her unique perspective with the network, bringing the Jamaican vibes to akhi&saltfish via her time working for the Jamaica Tourist Board and researching how Jamaica has faced barriers to have command of its culture in terms of tourism. It was a fascinating entry into our main topic.

Marcella's point in her research is that there’s an invisibility of ethnic minorities in domestic tourism. She highlights the stereotypes that we go home when traveling. We don’t have money, travelling isn’t a cultural reference point for us. But the numbers are also low because destinations don’t market to us.

Dr Daye talks to the reception she got from this research and inherent resistance to a call to action that seeks wholesale change. The overall call to action to our discussion is to think more about inclusion, particularly in respect to the protected characteristic of race.

It’s the information you provide, the stories you tell about your place, your provisions and facilities but also question who is making the decisions at your tourist board. Is there Diversity of Thought at the table?

Today we meet Reiss Taylor, a retired boxer from Birmingham who made a name for himself being a crafty journeyman and also holds the record as the UK's shortest pro-boxer.

We talk through his fascinating career, how a stint in football gave him an unrivalled work ethic that translated into boxing and helped him fulfil his dream of making a name for himself.

We also talk through the challenges he faced with boxing and why making the conscious decision to become a road warrior and compete as a journeyman was the best one for his career.

Being a social worker is a privileged position. You have the opportunity to provide the structure that will (hopefully) see a young person make the best choices available to them when they meet a crossroad in their life. That can change the course of their destiny.

Tommy Gale, Social Worker and Co-Founder of InsideUni, posted on LinkedIn about his average day as a social worker and we were intrigued. Have a listen to our conversation with him where we delve into the career, his professional journey thus far including a degree in politics from Cambridge University and a Frontline training programme.

Tommy is passionate about social work and keen to get across that the variety and direct impact that he can have on a daily basis is incredibly rewarding, as is getting positive feedback at the end of a tough intervention.

He admits the sector isn’t without it’s challenges. Social work, like most public services, is chronically underfunded and the strategy of the government to fund symptoms rather than causes is a frustration for Tommy but in that he talks on the need for decompression and detachment at times in what is a stressful job.

This was an amazingly insightful episode we’d encourage you to watch and share it was a pleasure to speak with Tommy. Stay tuned next week to get to know him.
